PART THREE

TRILOGIES ARE TIGHT

3) Today I saw X-Men 3 and Mission Impossible 3. The latter movie was one of the best I've seen this year. Man it was good.

2) Crushes are fun until you find yourself the likely object of one with its roots in junior high and existing only on a sad one-way telecommunications basis from someone you haven't seen in something like six years.

1) I have a new livejournal: chromanaut_pt3. Add only if you wish.

PART ONE

Two nights ago I wound up at a dance hosted by the Jewish Student Union. It was at the EMU fishbowl and had about 15 people at its high point.

I danced a lot. My knee is fucked up (swollen and painful).

PART TWO

E.E. Cummings is tight. Those who spell his name in lowercase be chumps. Future livejournal posts will be written in crappy imitations of his syntax and punctuation.

Rapid Voluntary Personality Transmogrifications

a) Being hot shit. This one's been going on for maybe a month or so. Hot shit about what I do, what I make, what I'm going to make, so on. Try it if you haven't already. It's fucking great.

b) The end of crushes. (And the crush party isn't happening.) Crushes are umpteenth drafts of long letters flawlessly handwritten in exotic inks with a custom cut quill on handmade paper and sealed with wax rendered from the your own body fat. They wind up falling in on themselves with weird contortions and self-deceit. Now I do business cards.

c) Less attention to how much/hard I'm working. It's a lot. I enjoy about 80-90% of it. I don't need to count.

Now I hear fast pounding, "take it, bitch," and exclamations of pain as one of them falls to the floor.

This weekend involved exciting climactic situations, defused in the most orderly way imaginable.
Two Really Awesome Things I've Discovered Today

1) Acrylic sheets/cement: this stuff is so rad. You can cut and drill it with any tool you'd use for wood, and it doesn't warm or crack or expand or any of that. The best part is that joining the corners of, say, a box is really easy and not messy at all if you use a needle applicator. I'm making prototypes for slipcasting and it totally kicks ass.

2) Camino: if you're on a mac, this is the web browser you should switch to. It's essentially firefox without the weird user interface. Ever since I started using google calendar, Safari just started to suck. The only thing missing is something like an AcidSearch plug-in, but since Camino is only ten days old I trust it's on its way.

Ok so,

Why Motion Design is the best class I've ever taken, and why Leon Johnson leaving may be the best thing that ever happened to the UO art program

Because, along with some other people, I suddenly feel compelled to create an art program here that totally kicks ass.

A kick ass art program:

Connects the making of stuff (production) with questions such as:

Who is it for?

How does it work and interact?

What story does it carry?

Where did the physical parts to make it come from? Where are they going?

How does this respond to the current way the world works?

Acknowledges our position as student-makers in that

We have little time

We have little money

We have little permission or recognition to do things

We are tremendously optimistic

We are the present and future

We have more than enough resources to do what we need

We have gobs of thoughts and experiences to tell each other about

Understands

that an academic department is a bureaucratic construction

which generouly offers decades of mastery, resources, physical space, et cetera

but is not a program

which includes an unsegmented flux of students which, like blood, pump through it and keep it living

Connects instantly and seamlessly with

Comparative literature

Commerce (e.g. Business, Advertising)

Philosophy

Social sciences

Physical sciences

It's own cartographic location

of city

state

and universe (e.g. Astronomy)

Unlike this list, is created by many people whom are not still lying in bed at 3:15 in the afternoon and writing but are out in the world doing and making.

A weekly happening occurs Friday afternoons in LA 197. Part craft workshop, part Jason Kottke, and part Cabinet magazine.

This coming Friday: What is the nation? Micronations, ethnic nationalisms, and imagined communities meet textile block printing, taught by Sara Stevens. Flags?
